The third wave of Covid is expected to hit the country by the end of August, though it is unlikely to be as severe as the second. Head of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases at the Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr. Samiran Panda

"There would be a nationwide third wave, but it would not be as high or as intense as the second wave," says the author.

He believes there are four factors that could lead to the third wave. The first of these is when the immunity gained during the first and second waves is lost. "If it drops, it might lead to a third wave," says the author.

Second, there could be a variation that bypasses the acquired immunity. Third, while the new variation may not be able to overcome immunity, it can spread quickly through the population.

Fourth, if states eliminate the limitations too soon, it could result in a new surge.

When asked if the variety in question was Delta Plus, he responded that both Delta and Delta Plus have spread over the country, and that "I'm not expecting any more public health chaos from the Delta variant."

The Indian Medical Association, the country's top doctors' body, said earlier this week that the third wave is "inevitable and imminent," pointing out that "both the government and the public are complacent and engaged in mass gatherings without following Covid protocols" in many parts of the country.

People are taking predictions regarding the second wave roughly as seriously as "weather predictions," according to the authorities.

On Thursday, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the world is in the "early phases" of Covid-19's third wave, which is being pushed by the virus's Delta strain.

The variety, which has now been detected in over 111 countries, first appeared in India and was responsible for the virus's deadly second surge.

"If it isn't already, we expect it to become the main COVID-19 strain circulating worldwide soon," the WHO chief added.
