VK Sreekandan, a Lok Sabha member, urged the government on Thursday to take action to address the issue of Indian students studying in China who are stranded in India due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In the Lower House, the Congress member from Kerala also moved a notice for an adjournment motion on the issue. The notice was turned down.
Mr Sreekandan told PTI that he plans to meet with Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday to discuss the issue.
According to the MP, over 24,000 Indian students studying in China for various courses have been stranded in India. More than 3,000 of them are from Kerala.
He stated that the Chinese authorities are not allowing them to return due to travel restrictions imposed by them, and that it is also unclear when China will lift the restrictions.
In the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, several countries, including China, have imposed travel restrictions for foreigners.
Students are now able to attend classes online. Physical classes are required for MBBS courses, but students are being denied the opportunity, according to Mr Sreekandan.
He urged the central government to raise the matter with Chinese authorities so that the stranded students could return to China to continue their studies.
