Chadalavada Anandha Sundhararaman Bhavani Devi, better known as Bhavani Devi, India's lone fencing representative, got off to a winning start in the women's individual sabre at the Tokyo Olympics at Makuhari Messe B Hall Yellow Piste. In just 6 minutes and 14 seconds, Bhavani defeated Tunisia's Nadia Ben Azizi 15-3. Bhavani's official FIE ranking is 42, while Nadia is ranked 384. Bhavani dominated the match from the start, scoring 8 points without answering from the Tunisian youngster in the first half.
Nadia couldn't hold out much longer in the second half, as she tried to postpone the inevitable, as the 29th seed quickly won India's first fencing match in Olympic history.
Bhavani Devi took the lead from the first 'En Garde' and never looked back.
Devi, on the other hand, was eliminated after losing to France's Manon Brunet in the Table of 32 match.
