A Twitter post by Congress on Sunday that was written against the government’s alleged snooping on nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee before the state’s Assembly polls with the help of Pagasus, an Israeli spyware, has been heartily welcomed by the Trinamool Congress party.

The tweet came a day before CM Mamata Banerjee arrives at New Delhi and also goes on to indicate a greater level of intimacy getting forged between the two parties.

Mamata’s visit to the national capital on Monday is being interpreted by many as an attempt by the TMC head to build a grand Opposition that will take on the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Mamata is expected to call on the Congress head, Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday, and later during her stay she is likely to visit several other leaders of the Opposition.

The Congress party’s official Twitter handle had the post, “PM Modi took the adage, ‘keep your enemies closer’ a little too far. #PegasusSnoopgate.” In the same post, the party shared a photo of Abhishek saying “Modi govt’s insecurities are endless”.

The tweet was soon afterwards shared by Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’ Brien who also wrote, “Khela Hobe (game on)”.

Trinamool Lok Sabha MP Saugata Roy also welcomed this move by the Congress party to take up the matter on social media and told the media, “We thank the Congress for condemning the hacking of Abhishek Banerjee’s phone. It would hopefully strengthen the bond between the Opposition parties.”

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pradeep Bhattacharya “condemned” the practice of spying on their ministers that is allegedly being followed by the government and said, “In both Houses of Parliament, we have been raising our voice against the phone tapping of our leader Rahul Gandhi and also of other Opposition leaders including Abhishek Banerjee.”

Bhattacharya also added, “We have fought against Centre’s policies with the support of Trinamool Congress on several occasions. However, it’s early to say what political turn this (sharing of Congress’s tweet) would take. As of now, it wouldn’t be right to comment on this (tie-up). We have to wait a little longer.”
