Kerala's immunisation programme will be halted since many of the state's districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, are running out of vaccine, according to state Health Minister Veena George.

"We currently have no vaccines on hand. For the next few days, it appears that there will be no vaccination drive in the state "she stated

Covishield vaccine doses are not available in Thiruvanathapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, or Alappuzha. The state is not expecting to receive new vaccine batches before July 29.

The minister asserted that the state's immunisation rate is higher than 100%, saying, "There isn't any waste... We request that the Center provide us with additional vaccines "..

She stated that the state has received over 1,66,00,000 doses of vaccination and has administered over 1,87,00,000 doses.

"With the first dose, we vaccinated 76 percent of the people over 45 years old. Almost a third of those who received both dosages did so "she stated

She claims that the immunisation rate for persons over 45 years old in Wayanad and Kasargod is 100%.

She emphasised the importance of increasing vaccination, saying that while the situation is still under control, a recent sero-prevalence survey revealed that roughly 42% of the population has developed antibodies against Covid.

"This demonstrates that more than half of the population remains unaffected... More vaccinations are required. People in Kerala are quite eager to get vaccinated. But the problem is that we lack vaccines "According to the minister.

Kerala has recently seen an increase in Covid cases and has been placed under lockdown, which was lifted for three days for Eid by the state administration.

The move prompted criticism from the Indian Medical Association and was challenged in the Supreme Court, but the Pinarayi Vijayan government refused to back down.

After hearing that the state's notification on loosening limitations had been in effect for two days, the highest court refused to overturn it.
