Dholavira- The oldest of civilization sites in India

Dholavira, Gujarat’s ancient city has been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is located in the district of Kutch and exhibits the ruins and remnants of the Indus Valley Civilization. It declared that this particular location had the grandest of the cities once upon a time and the recognition from UNESCO definitely brings it to the limelight.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization also referred to as the UNESCO decided to include Dholavira in its list of World Heritage Sites at the World Heritage Committee’s 44th session. Rudreswara temple in the Telangana region too was included in UNESCO’s list, bringing the net number of World Heritage Sites in India to as many as 40.

The site of Dholavira was first discovered back between the years 1967-68 and happens to be the fifth-largest among the various other Harappan sites. According to the research undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India, Dholavira, in ancient times, had been a major trading center. The ASI has listed out Southern Gujarat, Punjab and Sindh, and even Western Asia to have been taking part in the trade particularly. Antiques like ornaments of silver, gold, and terracotta were excavated from the site of Dholavira.

As per researchers, one of the most significant features of Dholavira is the well-planned water conservation system. It happens to be a highly sophisticated system, and also one of the earliest of systems found in this world. As one can understand by seeing the pictures, these structures were constructed out of stone and the city was dotted with many such huge reservoirs. Evidence of seal crafting too was found at Dholavira. Interestingly, the script on seals couldn’t be decoded yet, and also the language spoken could not be figured out.
