We spoke with Dr. Manoj Sharma, Senior Internal Medicine Consultant, Vasant Kunj, Fortis Hospital, to learn more about norovirus infection, its causes, and symptoms.

 What is norovirus and what is the reason for it?

"It is a very contagious virus that can cause gastroenteritis, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea," said Dr. Sharma. The mode of transmission is feces, which means that if they come into contact with contaminated food, water or defecation, they will be infected. can also stay on the surface, Dr. Sharma added. "If hand hygiene is not properly maintained, it will increase the chance of transmission of infection."

 Norovirus is worrying, especially during the monsoon, because the water quality in our home may not be good. "If the water is contaminated, it will affect the people in the house. In addition, if people infected with norovirus are cooking, they may infect other people," the doctor said.

 How to treat?

 For viral gastroenteritis, treatment is symptomatic and supportive. "So antibiotics have no effect. It's mainly about staying hydrated with ORS. Viral gastroenteritis tends to last five to six days or more." The key is to prevent dehydration," said Dr. Sharma.

 The best way to prevent infection is to maintain good hygiene standards, the doctor said.

 What is the difference between Norovirus and Coronavirus?

 Although Covid is spread through the air, But norovirus is transmitted through the oral route. "We have to ingest it so that the virus can enter the body. Although maintaining hand hygiene is essential in both cases, the use of masks is mainly for COVID. This is because the route of transmission is different in each case, "explained Dr. Sharma.
