India’s ace badminton player P V Sindhu, on Sunday made history by becoming the first Indian woman to have two individual Olympic medals to her credit. In Sunday’s match she managed to win a bronze medal after beating China's He Bing Jiao, 21 – 13, 21- 15.
Sindhu had won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 after losing to Spain's Carolina Marin in the final. Apart from her, the only other Indian athlete who has two individual Olympic medal to their name is wrestler Sushil Kumar.

On Sunday however, Sindhu was on an attacking mode from the very start and took a 4 – 0 lead in the first game. The Chinese got her first point after an unforced error by Sindhu and finished 2-4 with a nicely played point at the net.
Although Bing Jiao forced Sindhu to play at the net, the India rose up to the challenge and shot up with a lead of 8 – 6. Bing Jiao displayed some amazing defensive play with Sindhu leading 9 – 8 and the closing out with a powerful smash which got her ahead at 10 – 8. Another smash before the break gave the Indian ace her advantage and took her to 11-8.
After the break, Sindhu came back with full gusto breaking away to a 14 – 8 lead. Bing Jiao managed to do some damage control as she went up to 11 points but Sindhu kept her momentum going with a good show of attack and defence going up to 18 – 11.
Sindhu finally took the lead in the match as she closed out the first game at 21 – 13.
Game two also saw Sindhu take off to a good start with some great cross court smashes taking her to 4 – 1, then 6- 4, 7 – 5, 8 -5 and finally going into the mid-game break with a lead of 11 – 8.
