Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed the Opposition on Tuesday and said they have no respect for the Parliament or the people who have elected them. He said, they are not allowing the Parliament to function properly with repeated disruptions in the proceedings of the Monsoon session.

The Prime Minister was addressing a meeting of the BJP’s parliamentary party when he hit out at the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi in particular accusing them for the repeated adjournments that is coerced by a loud opposition. He said this was “an insult to the constitution... to democracy and to the public.”

The PM said, “Parliament is being insulted by the acts of the Opposition in both Houses. The person who snatched the paper and tore it is not repentant of his acts.”

The statement was pointed at MP Santanu Sen of the Trinamool Congress party who was seen grabbing documents out of the hands of IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw just before he was trying to make a statement on the ongoing Pegasus row.

The Prime Minister also took a dig at a Twitter post by Trinamool MP Derek O’Brien which said, “Passing laws or making Papri Chaat?” and mentioned that these were “derogatory comments” that have been passed by a “senior MP regarding passing of bills.”

In his verbal attack the PM primarily alluded to the Opposition’s boycott of the all-party meeting that that was summoned on July 20 to review the COVID-19 situation. In addition to that, he said, they had intercepted others from attending it.

In this meeting, PM Modi interacted with floor leaders of all parties of both Houses of the Parliament to keep them posted on the course of action with regards to the pandemic and the public health response associated with it.

It is also believed that PM Modi has asked his party MPs to lay bare this behaviour of the Congress party and certain opposition parties before the media and the public.

TMC has responded to this by demanding an answer of the government on how they could pass a legislation while there were protests underway by the opposition.

This is not the first time in the course of a single week that the PM has hit out at the Opposition. Earlier this week also, he lashed out at them over their agitations in both Houses.
