Indian wrestler Ravi Dahiya made his way to the finals of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 after defeating Kazakhstan's Nurislam Sanayev on Wednesday in the semi-finals of the men's freestyle 57kg category of the wrestling event.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya defeated Kazakhtan’s NoorIslam 7-9 through fall in the semi-final. He was trailing 7-9 but his opponent was unable to continue the game because of an injury that he sustained giving the Indian wrestler an opportunity of a lifetime, a chance at an Olympic gold medal propelling him directly to the finals.

The Kazakh had suffered the injury in the course of the match with the 23-year old Indian wrestler. While he was trailing Sanayev 7 – 9 in the match, he pinned his opponent to be called winner by fall. Dahiya made an amazing comeback with only minutes left in the bout having been on a score of 2-9 at one point in time. Sanayev sustained his injury during Dahiya’s late rally.

Dahiya had earlier won both matches based on his technical proficiency.

Dahiya’s victory has earned the nation its fourth medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Although, India will have at least bagged a silver with Dahiya’s win at the semi- finals, his primary focus will be at getting the gold.

Tokyo has been Ravi’s debut ground and he has made the most of it. He defeated Colombia's Oscar Tigraros 13-2 in the opening bout, that he won on the basis of technical superiority. He then went on to win over Bulgaria's Giorji Wangelov 14-4 in the quarterfinals giving him a chance to fight in the semi-finals.

Earlier in the 2012 London Olympics, Sushil Kumar had won a silver medal by making it to the final.

The finale that is scheduled on Thursday, will have Dahiya face two-time world champion Zaur Uguev of ROC.
