Despite the fact that India is bracing for a possible Covid-19 third wave, the country saw a 4% decrease in the number of Coronavirus cases for the week ending August 8. The reason for this, according to data from the Union Health Ministry, is a sharp decline in Covid-19 cases in several northeastern states. Kerala, which had previously been a source of concern due to its Covid-19 surge, saw a sign of plateauing in the Covid-19 surge last week. The number of cases reported in the southern state increased by 1% over the previous week. All tourist attractions will reopen today, according to the state (August 9). It has allowed people who have received at least one vaccine to stay in hotels and resorts.
According to data released by the Union Health Ministry on Monday, India reported 35,499 new Coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Covid-19 infections to 3,19,69,954, while the death toll rose to 4,28,309, with 447 new fatalities. According to the health ministry, the number of active cases in the country has decreased to 4,02,188, accounting for 1.27 percent of total infections.

In a positive development, the country's vaccine vaccination drive resumed in August. According to Health Ministry data, the daily average increased to 51.45 lakh doses from 48.26 lakh doses the previous week during the seven-day period of July 31-August 6. On August 7, India's cumulative vaccine coverage surpassed 50 million, making it the second-highest in the world after China. Another encouraging development is that an ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) study found that combining the Covishield and Covaxin vaccines improves immune protection.
Meanwhile, as the country's Covid-19 situation improves, several states/UTs have announced the reopening of schools for offline classes. The Delhi government has allowed schools for grades X to XII to reopen. The state of Maharashtra has announced that physical education classes will resume in schools in both rural and urban areas on August 17.
The Uttar Pradesh government announced that schools for intermediate students would reopen on August 16. After a three-month hiatus, schools in Odisha reopened for students in grades 10-12 on July 26. Meghalaya, a northeastern state, plans to reopen educational institutions after mid-August. Offline classes for students in Class 9-10 and pre-university college students will resume in Karnataka on August 23.
