The southern state of Kerala is witnessing the most number of new Covid-19 cases currently in India. The government here was forced into relooking at its pandemic control measures a few days ago although it is well ahead in its vaccination drive, tracking and testing and surveillance.

For the past few weeks, the daily number of cases in the country has been lurking around the 40,000 mark. The reduction in the number of cases has caused many states and Union Territories to reopen educational institutions for offline classes. However, Kerala along with some other north eastern states have been showing a different picture as the caseload here continues to rise.

The country logged 28,204 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours. This marks the lowest it has recorded in 147 days, ever since March 16. The cumulative figure now stands at 3,19,98,158 as per data released by the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday.

The daily number of deaths due to Covid-19 has also come down and currently hovers just under 400. In the last 24 hours the number of Covid deaths reported was 373 taking the death toll in India to 4,28,682, said the health ministry.

There has been a significant drop in the number of active Covid-19 cases across the country with 3,88,508 cases logged yesterday. This is the lowest in 139 days. The recovery rate has also shot up and is now at 97.45 per cent on a national level, as per the ministry’s reports.

Several schools and colleges across the country have been allowed to open for in person classes. These include schools in Delhi that have open classes from X to XII from Monday, schools in both rural and urban areas in Maharashtra will open from August 17, Uttar Pradesh will open schools for intermediate students from August 16, Meghalaya is to open educational institutions from mid-August and Karnataka has announced opening offline classes for Classes 9 and 10 as well as pre-university college students from August 23.

India’s vaccination drive has also picked up pace as the Centre has recently given a nod to Bharat Biotech’s Ankleshwar-based manufacturing plant to produce COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted, “Govt of India approves vaccine manufacturing facility for production of @BharatBiotech’s #Covaxin in Ankleshwar, Gujarat.” He added that the approval would aid in increasing the availability of Covid-19 vaccines in India.
