Wednesday, 18th August 2021

On Tuesday, August 17, the Madras High Court dismissed Suriya's writ petition seeking a waiver of interest on income tax assessments for 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. The Jai Bhim actor was ordered by the Income Tax Department to pay more than Rs 3.11 crore in taxes in 2011.

On Tuesday, August 17, the Madras High Court dismissed Suriya's writ petition seeking a waiver of interest on income tax assessments for two fiscal years (2007-2009). According to a Times Of India report, the Income Tax (IT) Department conducted a search operation at the Navarasa actor's residence in 2010 and after an assessment, asked him to pay Rs 3.11 crore. In 2018, the actor petitioned the High Court for an exemption from the waiver of interest for the income tax assessment.

Suriya, who will next be seen in Jai Bhim, which will be released on Amazon Prime Video in November, was asked by the IT department in 2011 to pay Rs 3.11 crore after the IT department assessed the actor's income tax for two fiscal years (2007-2008 and 2008-2009). The order came after the department conducted a search operation at the Soorarai Pottru actor's premises in 2010, including his T Nagar residence, Boat Club area bungalow, and the offices of his close associates.

Suriya challenged the order in front of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. The tribunal, however, ordered the actor to pay the amount estimated by the IT department. Suriya moved the case to the High Court in 2018 seeking exemption from the waiver of interest for the income tax assessment because the tribunal took three years to deliver its decision.

On Tuesday, August 17, Judge SM Subramaniam dismissed the 24-year-old actor's case after hearing the IT department's argument that Suriya is not entitled to an interest deduction because he did not fully cooperate with the income tax assessment process.

Suriya's production house 2D Entertainment's director and co-producer, Rajsekar Pandian, took to Twitter to clarify that all dues, including income tax and interest, were paid with complete cooperation. "ITax and Interest thereon were paid and adjusted in totality with absolute cooperation, as there are no dues payable from our side today!" he wrote. The only point of contention is the refund of interest by the department! The appeal will be considered after receipt and review of the original order.
