A BJP leader in Kulgam, a district in the south of Jammu and Kashmir, was shot dead by terrorists on Tuesday.

Javved Ahmad Dar was fired upon by militants not far from his home in BrazlooJageer area of the south Kashmir district at around 4.30 pm.

Dar had reportedly died on the spot. He was the BJP's constituency president of Homeshalibugh assembly constituency.

According to officials, the area has been cordoned off by security forces who have gone into an intense search operation to eke out the assailants involved in the assassination.

The killing of the minister has been condemned as heinous and fraught with cowardice from various quarters. BharatiyaJanata Party's Jammu and Kashmir spokesperson Altaf Thakur denounced the actterming it cowardly and barbaric.

In his appeal to police officials to apprehend the attackers and bring them to their books at the earliest, Thakur said, “The militants are feeling frustrated and targeting innocents. Killing unarmed people won't lead to anything. It is cowardly and a barbaric act.”

National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah took to the social media denouncing the act and said such spineless behavior only act as blockades to the road to peace in Kashmir. He wrote, “Terrible news from Kulgam. Javved Ahmed was gunned down in cold blood. I unreservedly condemn this terror attack and send my heartfelt condolences to Javved's family and colleagues. May Allah grant him place in Jannat.”

The NC also posted on Twitter, “JKNC unequivocally condemns the assassination of BJP leader Javved Ahmad in Kulgam. This is an act of cowardice and such dastardly acts are a hindrance to peace in Kashmir. Our deepest condolences to bereaved family in this time of grief.”

Others also voiced their dissent for such acts of violence including PDP president Mehbooba Mufti who said, “Condemn the killing of BJP leader Javaid Dar and there is no place for such acts of violence. Sympathies and condolences to his family.”

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference led by Sajad Lone said “We condemn the killing of BJP worker Javaid Ahmad Dar in strongest terms and without reservation. This is a senseless and an unjustifiable act of violence. We express our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family in this hour of grief.”
