Yogesh Kathuniya brings India ‘silver’…Get the details

India’s Yogesh Kathuniya won a silver medal in the men`s discus throw F56 at the Tokyo Paralympic Games. He finished second with a distance of 44.38 in the final on Monday.
The gold medal was bagged by Brazil`s Santos doe Claudiney Batista who made a new Paralympic Games record of 45.59. The third position was clinched by Cuba’s Leonardo Alandana Diaz who took bronze home with a best throw of 43.36.
24-year-old Kathuniya who hails from Delhi had suffered a paralytic attack when he was eight years old. It led to a condition whereby he had impaired coordination in his limbs. Despite this, Kathuniya had been lurking in the position where he could even win a gold medal until Batista achieved 44.57 in his first throw as the seventh athlete in order of throws.

Each participant in Standing or Seated Discus Throw, makes their six throws at one go after which the next participant in the order gets his chance.
The Brazilian athlete came up with his best effort of 45.59 in his sixth and last throw and even went on to set a Paralympic Games record.
Kathuniya, on the other hand achieved his season’s best on Monday and won a silver while Batista created a world record in this category with a best of 46.58.
It had not started all that well for Kathuniya who kicked off the big finale with a foul. He however, soon directed all his nervous energy and came up with a throw of 42.84m in his second attempt. A few more invalid throws and the Delhi boy managed to improve his mark to 43.55m and finally to 44.38m in his final attempt, that also won him his medal.
Kathuniya’s medal also adds to India’s total number of medals won at Tokyo 2020. It is the country’s fourth confirmed medal at the Tokyo Paralympics.
