In interview after interview, SRK has maintained that he is who he is today because many people came together to make his journey easier when he needed it most. Khan talks about his "life mentors" who offered him a place to stay in Mumbai when he didn't have a roof over his head in the video below. He recounts how even the most powerful celebrities, such as the evergreen Hema Malin, gave morsels of knowledge to him so that he might make better life decisions.

“I had no family when I moved here from Delhi. I have no one, and I tell everyone that I have an extended family in all of the filmmakers, all of these leading actresses, all of the producers, and some other film business pals. I honestly would not be commemorating 25 years of my life here if it weren't for them,” he stated at an event in 2016.

Khan's parents were removed from him when he was young, and he admits to using acting to express his emotions and fill the vacuum in his life. “All of a sudden, my parents vanished. We found out they had cancer, and they died two and a half months later. I was at a loss for what to do. I just felt like I needed to fill this vacuum with something one night in their mazaar. In the film industry, I received a lucky break. Acting isn't work for me; it's a place where I can express myself,” he told Rani Mukerji in a promotional video for her film Hichki.

According to the Hindustan Times, he said in a 2013 meeting with roughly 800 management students, "Poverty instils dread, tension, and occasionally sadness."

Despite living in abject poverty and having to take on roles that other stars turned down (Armaan Kohli turned down Deewana, Salman Khan turned down Baazigar, and Aamir Khan turned down Darr), Khan claims that he has never sold his soul for stardom – it's been sheer, backbreaking hard work mixed with incredible talent and unwavering faith in himself and the Universe.

The young child who stood on Marine Drive all those years ago had no idea how far he'd come. Or perhaps he did. Perhaps this is why he became the legend we now refer to as Shah Rukh Khan.
