Walnuts are incredibly heart-healthy. If you are into binge eating, then walnuts could make an ideal binge-eating food for you. This could lessen your chances of falling prey to cardiovascular diseases. As per the latest research, an adult who is consuming ½ a cup of walnuts per day for two consecutive years can experience a reduced level of LDL or low-density lipoprotein held responsible for causing cardiovascular diseases. The results of the research were published in the journal ‘Circulation’ of the American Heart Association. Walnuts are full of omega-3 fatty acids known to boost cardiovascular health.

“Prior studies have shown that nuts in general, and walnuts in particular, are associated with lower rates of heart disease and stroke. One of the reasons is that they lower LDL-cholesterol levels, and now we have another reason: they improve the quality of LDL particles,” stated research co-author Emilio Ros, MD, Ph.D., Director, Lipid Clinic at the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona; Spain.

“LDL particles come in various sizes. Research has shown that small, dense LDL particles are more often associated with atherosclerosis, the plaque or fatty deposits that build up in the arteries,” Ros elucidated.

“Our study goes beyond LDL cholesterol levels to get a complete picture of all of the lipoproteins and the impact of eating walnuts daily on their potential to improve cardiovascular risk,” Ros further added.

In one of the sub-studies of the Walnuts and Healthy Aging Study, a large-scale, two-year-old randomized controlled examination as to whether the walnuts lead to healthy aging or not, researchers have evaluated if the regular consumption of walnut, regardless of the diet of a person or the place they live, has beneficial impacts on the lipoproteins.

The study was undertaken between May 2012 and May 2016 and it involved about 708 participants between the age groups of 63 and 79 (among which 68 percent were women) who were of good health, were independent-living adult people residing in Barcelona, in Spain, and in Loma Linda, California.
