Telegram has joined the list of apps that have been downloaded more than a billion times around the world. Interestingly, India played a very important role in Telegram’s new victory because of its very important role in India’s largest number of users. India is said to be the largest market for messages, which is installed at 22% of life. Telegram has been around since 2013, but after witnessing it, WhatsApp’s chaotic policies began to work exponentially. Many users who have no idea about WhatsApp’s new terms of service and privacy policy have downloaded Telegram for fear of an invasion of privacy.

The Sensor Tower report shows that Telegram broke the 1 billion download mark for the first time on Friday. "[India] is followed closely by Russia and Indonesia, which accounted for 10% and 8% of [all installs], respectively. Application installations accelerated in 2021, reaching approximately 214.7 million installs in the first half of 2021, compared to 2020 133 million times in the first half of the year increased by 61%", according to the Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch. Interestingly, Telegram's competitor WhatsApp also has the largest user base in India. However, TechCrunch reports that downloads are not equal to the active user base of the app. It currently has more than 500 million active users, all thanks to WhatsApp. After users believed that Telegram was more secure than WhatsApp, Telegram witnessed fierce attacks by users. Confusing terms of service and privacy policy make users dizzy. However, this has not hindered WhatsApp's growth in any way, because it is the most widely used messaging app and despite its noise-filled policy, it has 2 billion active users worldwide.

The Sensor Tower report noted that apart from India, Telegram has the most users in Indonesia and Russia. Indonesia accounted for 10% of the total share, while Russia accounted for 8%.

"By focusing on privacy, Telegram has successfully carved its own niche in the highly competitive mobile messaging market," said Gadgets 360, citing Craig Chapple, Sensor Tower's mobile information strategist in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Telegram was launched as an iOS-only app by brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov in 2013. Its headquarters are in Dubai.
