Bhupendra Patel to take oath as CM of Gujarat

After an unexpected step down from the post of chief minister by Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, Bhupendra Patel will take oath as he accedes the top post in the state on Monday.

Patel will become Gujarat’s 17th Chief Minister after Rupani’s shocking exit from his position ahead of the Assembly elections next year.

The BharatiyaJanata Party’s pick of the 59-year old minister, who is also a protégé of former Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, came as a surprise to many. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and some other top party officials are also expected to attend the oath ceremony in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

The Governor of Gujarat AcharyaDevvrat extended an invitation to Patel to take oath of office as the state’s new chief minister at a ceremony on Monday at 2:20pm.

The Governor wrote in a Twitter post, “The newly appointed leader of the BharatiyaJanata Party's Legislature Party, Bhupendrabhai Patel, presented a proposal to form a new government under his leadership at the Raj Bhavan. Accepting the proposal, he was invited to take oath as the Chief Minister on September 13, 2021, at 2:20 pm.”

Patel, who was elected as leader of the BJP legislature party after a party meet on Sunday, met up with Governor Devvrat earlier in the day at Raj Bhavan and was even accompanied by Rupani along with a delegation of BJP leaders.    

An MLA from the Ghatlodia seat, the party decided to choose a Patidar for the role of the state’s chief minister, ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections scheduled in 2022.

The Patidars are a dominant community in Gujarat that has a looming presence and a big hold over the electoral votes. With their control in the fields of education, realty and cooperative sectors, the Patidars have dominance over the political economy.
