Young Boys beat Manchester United 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday, with substitute Jordan Siebatcheu scoring the game's winning goal with the final kick of the game after Cristiano Ronaldo had started the scoring. In front of a jubilant crowd at Wankdorf Stadium, USA attacker Siebatcheu pounced on Jesse Lingard's short back-pass to sneak the ball past David de Gea for a 95th-minute winner. Ronaldo had given United the lead earlier in the game, his third goal in two games since returning to Old Trafford.
Aaron Wan-sending-off Bissaka's late in the first half for a risky tackle on Young Boys midfielder Christopher Martins, though, gave Young Boys optimism.
In the second half, the hosts equalised with Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu, and Ronaldo was replaced before Siebatcheu scored the victory.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team is off to a bad start in Group F, especially with harder tests against Atalanta and Villarreal looming.
At the very least, Ronaldo improved his record in the Champions League: he now has 135 goals in the league, 15 more than his old adversary Lionel Messi.
He'll be 37 early next year, but his desire to win Europe's top club championship knows no bounds, and he plainly believed that going to Old Trafford would give him a better chance of winning a sixth European Cup than staying at Juventus.
United, on the other hand, hasn't been a serious contender in the Champions League in a decade, and this is another another dismal European outcome for them.
Last season, Young Boys won their fourth consecutive Swiss title, but their main scorer, Cameroon's Jean-Pierre Nsame, suffered a devastating injury, and coach Gerardo Seoane left for Bayer Leverkusen.
David Wagner, a German-born former USA international and former Premier League manager of Huddersfield Town, has taken his place in the Swiss capital.
Red card changes game
While this was an obvious mismatch on paper, Young Boys had a raucous support in a crowded stadium, thanks to the lifting of coronavirus restrictions in Switzerland.
United, on the other hand, stunned the audience by taking an early lead, with Bruno Fernandes sending a beautiful cross from the left flank for Ronaldo to slip in behind Ulisses Garcia at the back post and score.
Goalkeeper David von Ballmoos made contact with the shot but couldn't keep it out, and Ronaldo scored his first Champions League goal of the season.
He's now scored in the Champions League for the 16th consecutive season, and he had another shot stopped after a rapid break forward, immediately after Switzerland winger Christian Fassnacht had troubled David de Gea at the opposite end.
The visitors appeared to be on their way to picking off their opponents on the break at that point, but Wan-Bissaka was sent off in the 35th minute.
Martins, a Luxembourg international, was caught by the full-studs back's above the left ankle, and French referee Francois Letexier had no choice but to send him a straight red card.
Solskjaer promptly replaced Jadon Sancho with Diogo Dalot as a right-back replacement. He then substituted Raphael Varane for Donny van de Beek in the second half, who had made his first start of the season.
With Ronaldo alone up front in the second half, Young Boys pressed forward in search of an equaliser, which came in the 66th minute when Ngamaleu went in front of Varane and nudged in Meschack Elia's cross from the right, much to the pleasure of the home fans.
Ronaldo was taken off in the 72nd minute, and Young Boys won it with Lingard's brilliant pass for Siebatcheu at the conclusion of the five-minute added time.
