Kerala Reports 19,653 Fresh Covid-19 Cases, State Govt Announced Stringent Lockdown Measures in Specific Areas

Kerala logged 19,653 new cases of Covid-19 infections in the past 24 hours along with 152 fatalities due to the illness. The test positivity rate in the state remains above 17 per cent.

The number of active cases in the state now stands at 1,73,631 after 26,711 people recovered from the illness on Sunday.

Kerala government will be taking more stringent steps to curb the raid spread of infections and intensify lockdown measures where the weekly infection population ratio (WIPR) is above 10. The affected places would be notified by the district disaster management authority (DDMA) every week according to an order from Chief Secretary V P Joy.

The order said the affected areas would be publicised through websites and other media.

As the country continues to record a decline in the daily number of Covid-19 cases, it is likely that authorities may open the doors for overseas tourists after a space of almost a year and a half.

Moreover, in an attempt to revive the pandemic hit tourism, aviation and hospitality industries, the government will issue visas free of cost to the first five lakh visitors. These sectors were hit hard ever since the lockdown was announced back in March 2020.

Meanwhile, cricket fans who are headed to the UAE for live viewing of the remainder of the matches from the stalled Indian Premier League, 2021, will be required to adhere to certain Covid-related protocols imposed by the BCCI.

According to the latest regulations issued, spectators visiting the Dubai International Cricket Stadium will be required to show proof of double vaccination instead of a negative RT-PCR test report.
