Actor SonuSood Denies Tax Evasion Allegations, Says, “I Have Pledged Myself to The Service of The People of India”

Bollywood actor SonuSood issued a statement, days after the Income Tax department conducted a raid on his premises and claimed that Sood had been detected of evading taxes amounting to over Rs 20 crore so far.

The actor denying all allegations said he is a law abiding citizen of the country and also mentioned that he does not need to state his side of the story.

In an interview Sood said, “Whatever documents, details they asked for, we gave. Whatever questions they asked, I answered. I did my part, they did theirs. Whatever questions they raised, we answered each and every one of them with documents. That's my duty. We are still providing documents…it is part of the process.”

He added, “I make sure every single penny donated by anyone in this universe is accounted for.”

According to the agency, they were on a “search and seizure operation” on a number of properties in Mumbai, Lucknow, Kanpur, Jaipur, Delhi and Gurugram, including one belonging to a prominent actor in Mumbai.

The Department also added that in the course of their search they have come across incriminating evidence in relation with tax evasion on the premises of the actor and his associates.

They said, “The main modus operandi followed by the actor had been to route his unaccounted income in the form of bogus unsecured loans from many bogus entities.”

Sood, who has been in the news during the early part of the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns for the generosity he had shown in helping needy workers get back to their hometowns, has also been accused by the Central Board of Direct Taxes of violating the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) while raising donations from abroad.

SonuSoodhad also headed a fund-raising operation during the Covid-19 pandemic, through which he had raised money for those seeking medical assistance, according to him.

He wrote on a Twitter post, “You don't always have to tell your side of the story. Time will. I have pledged myself to the service of the people of India with all my strength and heart. Every rupee in my foundation is awaiting its turn to save a precious life and reach the needy. In addition, on many occasions, I have encouraged brands to donate my endorsement fees to humanitarian causes too, which keeps us going.”
