Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be welcomed by the President of the United States Joe Biden at the White House on September 24 for the duo’s first bilateral meeting.
As per the American President’s weekly schedule released on Monday, “The President will participate in a bilateral meeting with His Excellency Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India.”
According to some White House officials, the encounter will prove to be crucial as it is expected to strengthen strategic ties between the two countries who will engage in talks related to the situation in Afghanistan and how they can together counter terrorism.
In the following month, Biden will also hold the first ever in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit Biden will convene the first-ever in-person Quad Leaders' Summit with the Indian Prime Minister NarendraModi, YoshihideSuga- Prime Minister of Japan and Scott Morrison- Australian Prime Minister.
The leaders will meet to review the headway that has been made since their previous virtual meet that was held earlier on March 12 this year.
They will also discuss regional issues of shared interest according to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. It said in a statement, “As part of their ongoing efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, they will review the Quad Vaccine initiative which was announced in March this year, they will also exchange views on contemporary global issues such as critical and emerging technologies, connectivity and infrastructure, cyber security, maritime security, humanitarian assistance/disaster relief, climate change and education.”
However, the US president has had multiple dialogues with PM Modi, albeit virtually, ever since he was elected president earlier this year in January. The last time they spoke was on April 26 and the last time Modi visited the United States was in September, 2019 when the country was under the leadership of President Trump.
PM Modi will embark on his first overseas visit in six months with this US trip and his second since the onset of the pandemic. He had earlier travelled to Bangladesh in March to participate in an event marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman and 50 years of the War of Liberation of that country.
