History is in the making as Vice-President of the United States of America Kamala Harris is scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister on India Narendra Modi at the White House on Thursday afternoon. On the eve of this epoch making moment, a prominent US newspaper in Harris’ home state has termed it as a “coming of age” one for the Indian diaspora.
“It does represent a ‘coming of age’ moment for the diaspora, which is now more than 4 million strong,” Milan Vaishnav, director of the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, wrote.

The meeting between the Harris and Modi, the highest ranking Indian American and the leader of India, is of special import especially at a time when India is steadily becoming a close ally of the US. The meeting is also taking place at a time when the Biden administration is concentrating on continuing the strategy adopted by his predecessor Donald Trump of getting closer to India and other Asian and Pacific nations in order to respond to China’s growing power. They are developing a sound economic and military liaison in the region.
The Indian PM will meet President Biden on Friday.
56-year old Harris is the first Indian American to have ever got elected to the post of vice president of the United States. She will be meeting the Indian leader whose government has always been known to uphold the cause of the diaspora along with not shying from speaking openly about the two countries and their combined interests on a global front. The meeting scheduled to last an hour will be the first in-person meeting between the two leaders.
According to the daily, “The meeting between the leaders comes as the Biden administration moves closer to India and other Asian and Pacific nations, continuing the Trump administration’s focus on responding to China’s growing power by building America’s economic and military ties in the region.”
A White House source has confirmed that during the course of the meeting, Harris would focus on reinforcing ties between the two nations.
As per the official, “This meeting will build upon their June 3 telephone conversation addressing the COVID response. They plan to discuss democracy, human rights, climate, and global health issues.”
