The Blue Whale: Interesting Facts
This whale is one of the world's most unusual creatures. They have several distinguishing traits that distinguish them from other animals, marine mammals, and even whales.
The Blue Whale is the World's Largest Animal... Ever – The blue whale is the world's largest living creature. These whales may reach a length of 105 feet! The Argentinosaurus, the largest dinosaur yet discovered, weighed only 100 tonnes (about 220,000 lbs.). Blue whales can weigh up to 200 tonnes, so Argentinosaurus just doesn't cut it.
Blue Whales Eat Krill — This gigantic species lives almost entirely on krill, which are tiny shrimp-like organisms. They eat by opening their enormous mouths, swimming forward, and then filtering the water out through a mechanism known as "baleen." Baleen are keratin plates, which are the same material as your hair and fingernails. The sheets of baleen resemble stiff hair, and the shrimp are left behind as the whale forces the water out of its mouth via the baleen.
