BharatiyaJanata Party’s Dilip Ghosh was ‘assaulted’ during his door-to-door campaign for the Bhabanipur Assembly by-poll on Monday and had to curtail his propaganda after matters took a violent turn with TMC supporters protesting against him.
Ghosh later proposed that the by-poll be put off for a later date instead of on the scheduled date, September 30, until the situation is brought under control. The Election Commission meanwhile, has asked the state government to present a report on the alleged matter.

According to SukantaMajumdar, the West Bengal BJP president, Ghosh was “kicked, pushed and heckled” by members and supporters of the Trinamool Congress party. A tussle between supporters of the two groups near JaduBabu Bazar also led to a BJP worker sustaining injuries.
Posting a video of the scenario in the affected area, Ghosh wrote on Twitter, “How safe is the life of the common man in this state when public representative is being attacked in Bhabanipur, the home turf of Madam Chief Minister ?”
Monday was the last day of campaigning and the BJP posted a huge cluster of party members including Ghosh in Bhabanipur to extend support toPriyankaTibrewal, the party’s candidate who has been pitted against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming by-poll.
As per Ghosh, the brawl had triggered when TMC supporters had physically pushed him as he was trying to make his way into a vaccination camp. TMC on the other hand, maintain that Ghosh’s security had threatened their people with guns.
As per a tweet by the TMC, “BJP hits a new low. How dare a gun be aimed at (the) public in broad daylight? Do people not have the right to protest against leaders they do not support? Such blatant violation of human rights is shameful! This compromises the safety and security of people in Bhabanipur!”
Slogans of “go back” and “outsider” were raised as several leaders of the BJP canvassed in the area for votes. A fuming Ghosh was escorted out of the camp and whisked off in his car.
Firhad Hakim, a TMC leader and Mamata Banerjee loyalist said this was an attempt by the BJP to ruffle feathers in a “peaceful middle class neighbourhood.”
