Former Punjab chief minister and veteran Congressman Amarinder Singh had an hour-long meeting with Union Interior Minister Amit Shah at his home in Delhi, amid his party's crisis in Punjab and speculation about joining the BJP days after who left the highest office in the state.
Mr. Singh had refused to answer questions about joining the BJP, but said his options were open to him during his resignation as Chief Minister earlier this month. His team called it a "courtesy call" and left unanswered questions about his future plans.
Later that night, his media adviser, Raveen Thukral, quoted him as saying that he had spoken to the Union Minister of the Interior about peasant issues.
Yesterday, Mr. Thukral had said: "Too much has been read about Captain Amarinder's visit to Delhi."
"He is on a personal visit where he is meeting some friends and is cleaning the Kapurthala House (the residence of the Prime Minister of Punjab in the capital) ... There is no need for unnecessary speculation," he added.
Congress refused to speculate. In the party's first official response, Senior Leader Manish Tiwari told NDTV: “There has to be a valid and valid reason. Ask the captain. I am sure he will be happy to answer you. "
Earlier this month, Mr. Singh resigned as Prime Minister of Punjab a year before the elections after a long and bitter dispute with critics such as the cricketer. and politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was appointed party leader by the Gandhis.
During his resignation, Mr. Singh, who is believed to be the largest mass leader of Congress in the state, said that he was "humiliated" three times for the leadership of Congress in his battle with Mr. Sidhu.
He also said that his political options are open and that he would make a decision after speaking with "friends."
The 79-year-old has been in Congress for more than four decades and had ups and downs with leadership. Seen as a loyalist to the Gandhi family for years, he had recently expressed reservations about him.
After resigning, he said in an unlimited criticism of the Gandhis: "I was ready to go after the victory, but never after the defeat ... If she (Sonia Gandhi) had just called me and asked me to resign, I would As a soldier, I know how to do my job. "
The Gandhi brothers, who had strongly supported Navjot Sidhu during the crisis, called them "politically inexperienced" and said the advisers were misleading them.
Yesterday, Mr. Sidhu, who expected to succeed Mr. Singh in the highest position, started a new commotion for Congress and announced the election of the new Prime Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi, to the cabinet.
Amarinder Singh's reaction was "I told you so."
