Navjot Singh Sidhu Reinstated Back On Board After Sudden Resignation On Tuesday

Navjol Singh Sidhu re-joins as Congress chief…get the details

Friday, 1st October 2021

Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had recently stepped down from his post as Congress chief in Punjab, has been taken back on board as the state chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi took matters into hand to end the long drawn crisis and resolve differences.

The two leaders had a meeting on Wednesday where Harish Chaudhary, the party observer was also present. According to sources both the ministers are trying to work towards a peaceful solution.

NavjotSidhu’s sudden decision to quit from his post on Tuesday had come as a shock to several party members. The reason behind this major step on his part has been attributed to certain new appointments made by the CM in an attempt to reshuffle his Cabinet.

It is however still not clear how the contentious appointments of the DGP and the AG is going to be dealt with.

Last month, after Channi took over from Amarinder Singh, APS Deol whose name has been associated with the controversial police firing case in 2015, was reinstated.

Another point of contention arose when the CM formed a panel for the appointment of a new DGP as it indicated Channi was ready to drop IqbalPreet Singh Sahota as Punjab police chief.

Sahota also had connections with the 2015 sacrilege case- a topic of distress in the state- as he was the head of a special investigative team probing the case.

CM Charanjit Singh will be visiting the national capital to meet some of the top leaders where a key agenda is likely to be Sidhu’s concerns with the new MLAs.

Sidhu was appointed as the party chief in Punjab after a year-long tussle with former CM Amarinder Singh. He said, “My fight is issue-based and I have stood by it for a long time. I cannot compromise with my ethics, my moral authority,” and added, “What I witness is a compromise with issues, agenda in Punjab. I cannot misguide the high command nor can I let them be misguided.”

Amarinder Singh severed ties with the Congress on Thursday but also made it clear that he would not join the BJP.
