Pune Opens Up Temple Gates On First Day of Navratri, Devotees Seen Lined Up

After remaining closed for almost six months due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, religious places in Pune, Maharashtra opened their gates to devotees on Thursday.

With the nine day festivities of Navratri commencing, people from all across the city were seen queueing up outside some of its most famous temples.

Mahesh Suryawanshi, one of the trustees of Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Mandal said, “Since morning, devotees have been coming in good numbers to visit Lord Ganesha here. We are taking all precautions and following all COVID-19 rules and regulations while allowing entry to people inside the sanctum sanctorum.”

The decision to reopen temples across Maharashtra on the first day of Navratri had earlier been announced by the state government.

Meanwhile, Pune district logged 647 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday along with one case of death due to the infection. There were 696 people who recovered from the illness on the same day and the number of active cases were 5,558. So far, they have tested 22,800 samples for Covid-19.

In the span of the week between September 29 and October 5, there were 3,925 cases of coronavirus reported from Pune district alone in Maharashtra. It accounted for 21 per cent of the entire state’s count of 19,170 cases recorded during that period, as per data released by the State Health Department on Wednesday.

The positivity rate in Pune went up from 3.5 per cent only a week ago to 3.59 per cent.
