Monday, 11th October 2021

Fruits are as important as vegetables. They are packed with fiber, minerals, and vitamins. Fruits are also rich in antioxidants. Consumption of fruits is cancer preventative…it also helps in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol and is further effective in helping you maintain perfect and healthy body weight.

But even good things have their own side effects and fruits are not an exception. For instance, fruits high in sugar coupled with other carb-rich foods can lead to blood sugar spikes in diabetics. There’s a difference between fructose coming from whole fruits and that coming from other sources.

But, before going into the side effects of fructose, we must first understand what fructose actually is. As per the definition from Mayo Clinic, fructose is a kind of sugar that’s found naturally in fruits, in certain veggies, in fruit juices, and also in honey. In table sugar (sucrose) too, fructose is one of the basic components. Also, high-fructose corn syrup is made use of for sweetening many beverages and processed foods.

The side effects of fructose are listed below. Read on…

Brain health

Too much fructose can affect brain health in a negative way. Fructose leads to aggravated neuroinflammation which in turn leads to oxidative stress of the brain cells and brain mitochondrial dysfunction. In other words, fructose can beget several neurological disorders.

Liver health

The liver processes the excess Fructose and converts it to fat through a biological process referred to as lipogenesis. The fat molecules accumulate in the liver resulting in the Non-alcoholic fatty liver condition. Across the world, 25% of the people suffer from this condition and 9-32 % of the Indians to are affected by it. Liver inflammation and oxidative damage to the liver cells are also caused due to excess fat in the liver.

Digestive issues

The latest research shows that excessive fructose consumption can increase the chances of irritable bowel syndrome or IBS and diarrhea. Abdominal pain, bloating, constipation or indigestion may be associated with these conditions.

Heart health, Diabetes and Obesity

Too much fructose, when consumed, may lead to diabetes, obesity, and insulin resistance. Fat may start piling up in the body, resulting in glucose intolerance and impairing the normal functioning of the body. The levels of Uric acid too might spike due to high fructose consumption and this can trigger a rise in triglycerides and blood pressure, thereby impacting heart health.
