A 6-month-old baby girl has been tested positive for corona virus on Wednesday in Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. When she underwent an open heart surgery on April 9th, the doctors observed that she had other issues. 36 medics and 18 doctors have now been quarantined.
The baby had congenital heart disease with congestive heart failure. She was diagnosed with ventricular and arterial septal defects and other heart problems in a private hospital in Ludhiana and was later referred to PGI for operation. However, she was tested positive for covid-19 after her overall health started improving.
PGI bulletin stated, “A pre-operative test for COVID-19 returned positive on April 21. The baby was subsequently shifted to the COVID-19 facility in Nehru Hospital Extension, PGI. She continues to receive ventilatory support”.
A spokesperson said, “We are currently investigating how the baby caught the COVID-19 infection. Given that the incubation period of COVID-19 infection is generally up to 2 weeks (but can be variable), it is possible that the baby may have been incubating the infection at the time of admission to PGI”.
There was no travel history or family contact. However, the baby’s contacts are being tested.
