A fifth of its production capacity might be shifted to India from China

Apple Inc. is all set to move a fifth of its production capacity to India from China. Reports say that the company wants to take advantage of PLI scheme given by the Indian government in order to boost local production.

According to the reports, “up to $40 billion worth of smartphones” will be manufactured in India for export purposes. Apple has contracted Foxconn and Wistron for production.

Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone XR are produced in India. Production of Apple iPhone SE and iPhone 6S have been stopped, which were previously produced here.

However, these reports are not yet confirmed though Apple has been successful in the Indian market. 62.7% of the market share has been taken by Apple in India’s smartphone market as per IDC’s report.

Apple had been thankful to the Indian government for relaxing local sourcing norms and said that it would wait for the “day welcoming customers to India’s first Apple retail store”.

Apple hasn’t launched its stores though the resellers sell the Apple products. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said in February that Apple retail store can be expected in 2021. Apple will shortly sell iPhone SE in India along with Homepod smart speaker.
