Reformed don dies of brain cancer

N Muthappa Rai, Bengaluru’s reformed underworld don passed away on Friday at a private hospital due to brain cancer.
He had been diagnosed for brain cancer last year and was admitted to Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road. He expired today morning at 2:30 am, said the source.
Rai entered the field at a tender age. He was born in Puttur, Karnataka, into a Tulu-speaking Bunt family.
He was accused for murder and conspiracy. He was questioned by CBI, RAW, IB and the Karnataka Police after he was deported from UAE to India. Without proper evidences, he was freed.
He founded ‘Jaya Karnataka’, a charitable organization in his reformed years. He was seen in ‘Katari Veera Surasundarangi’ (Kannada film-2012) and ‘Kanchilda Baale’ (Tulu film-2011).
A film based on his life was shot in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Mangaluru, Dubai and London with Vivek Oberoi as the lead. However, due to delays in production, it has not been released.
Rai celebrated his birthday with Oberoi and Verma.
He resigned from the public life as well as ‘Jaya Karnataka’ after he was diagnosed with cancer. His last rites are going to be performed on Friday at Bidadi, his family said.
