Wednesday, 20th May 2020

Cyclonic storm Amphan is likely to show its prowess in West Bengal between 4 pm-6 pm today evening. This is the one of the most powerful cyclonic storms over Bay of Bengal in 2 decades.

Amphan that was initially a super cyclone declined in strength to become an “extremely severe cyclonic storm" on this Tuesday lead to very violent winds and torrential rains in several parts of Bengal and Odisha as it drew closer to the eastern coastline of India.

Evacuation of over 4 lakhs people so far has taken place in the states to minimize anticipated cyclone-triggered damages to life and property. As per forecasts the cyclone is likely to bring gushing winds at the speed of 185 km/per hour when it moves across Digha in West Bengal and Hatiya Island in Bangladesh where nearly 20 million people have been evacuated to safer shelters. 12, 000 such shelters have been set up to accommodate these people. Amphan is the second ‘super cyclone’ to have formed in the Indian Ocean’s northeastern part since the beginning of records. Indian Navy is well prepared for offering relief measures to people who are in need of it during or post the cyclonic storm. The Navy staffs are on ‘high alert’ for the same.
