PM Narendra Modi on this Tuesday expressed his condolences for the major destruction of lives due to the fire that broke out in Kolkata on this Monday evening at 6 pm and sanctioned ? 2 lakhs worth ex-gratia to the families of the people who died in that fire and about ? 50, 000 to people who were severely wounded.

Nearly nine entities, including 2 Railway staffs, 4 fire fighting staffs and an ASI were killed in this unfortunate incident that occurred at the topmost floor of a high-rise building of 13 storeys belonging to Eastern Railway located in the Strand Road of Kolkata, said Piyush Goyal, Union Minister.

As per information, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and also several other Railway staff rushed to the spot without delay and emptied a huge bulk of the trapped staffs who were present there.

"PM Narendra Modi has approved an ex-gratia of ? 2 lakhs each from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the tragic fire in Kolkata. ? 50,000 would be given to those seriously injured," stated the office of the Prime Minister in a Twitter message on this Tuesday morning.

"Saddened by the loss of lives due to the fire tragedy in Kolkata. In this hour of sadness, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest," tweeted PM Modi.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee went on-site visit earlier and also promised ? 10 lakh worth compensation and also government jobs for any one member of the family of those who died in the fire.

The fire broke out on the top floor of the 13-storied building here at around 6 pm on Monday evening. As per a statement, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and other Railway staff immediately rushed to the 13th floor and evacuated most of the staff present there.

The team of the fire brigade too rushed the site at about 6.30 pm and got started with the operations to tame the fire. The fire could be controlled by 11 pm.
