Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad said the team’s batting is a “concern” after their shocking loss to Scotland by six runs in the opening match of the T20 World Cup played in Muscat, Oman.

The World number six team struggled to chase the target of 141 runs and finished at 134-7 in Sunday’s match.

Mahmudullah said after the heart-breaking defeat, “I think as a batting unit, I think we have disappointed ourselves, so it's a big concern.”

He added, “And we need to see where we have made those mistakes and probably need to try not to repeat those mistakes in the next game.”

While the team’s batsmen failed to put up a good show, the bowlers had done their best to restrict the opponents at a low total. The Scottish side was even reduced to 53-6 at one point in time until Chris Greaves scored a match winning 45 runs and then went on to nab 2 crucial wickets which tilted the match in their favour.

Having won the toss and deciding to bowl first, the Bangladesh side were going good with their spinners shining with the ball, before Greaves took the wickets of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim in two overs with his leg spin and turned things for the worse for the Asian team.

Mahmudullah said, “We picked up six wickets I think within 60 runs, but after that they had a good partnership, I think they played better cricket than us, and we were just not good enough tonight.”

Three of the team’s best batters, Mahmudura, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, were struggling to put up quick scores on the board. Mahmudullah (22 balls 23 off) and Mushfiqur (36 balls 38 off) had a strike rate of just over 100, while Shakib (28 balls 20 off) had a strike rate of 71.43.

Mahmudura said, “I didn’t deliberately hit the bat slowly. I couldn’t hit the border. Next time I have to hit the bat better.”

Bangladesh will play against Oman on Tuesday in the 16-nation tournament. They will not be able to find direct passage into the Super 10 stage due to a low ranking.
