NT Rama Rao needs no introduction. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao is the full name of NTR. He is a renowned personality in the realm of Indian Cinema. He is also one of the legends of the Telegu film industry, ruling over the industry for many decades. The other one is Akkineni Nageswara Rao.  Apart from being a legendary filmy personality, NT Rama Rao also was a notable figure in the realm of politics. He had been the Chief Minister of the state of Andhra Pradesh across three terms for 7 years at a stretch.

This vibrant and capable personality was born on the 28th of May, 1923 in a village called Nimmakuru falling within the Madras Presidency of the British Raj. His parents were Venkata Ramamma and Nandamuri Lakshmaiah.

After the completion of his graduation from the Andhra Christian College located in Guntur, NT Rama Rao joined as sub-registrar at the Madras Service Commission.

But, he was not satisfied as his dreams were different. He was fond of acting. In just 3 weeks time, he quitted his job. Mana Desam, a movie of the year 1949 was his first movie. Next came Pathala Bharaivi (1951), an enduring legend in the history of Telegu films.

He has starred in more than 300 films during his lifetime. He was catapulted to the peak of fame around the 1950s for his depiction of the Hindu deities especially Rama and Krishna. His roles as Gods in the various mythological films converted NT Rama Rao into a ‘messiah of the masses’. In the movie ‘Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam’ (1960), he played the role of Lord Vishnu while in the movie Dakshayagnam (1962), he played the role of Lord Shiva. Some of his movies such as Nartanasala (1963) and Mayabazar (1957) became timeless classics. In the later years, NTR started acting in the movies like Devudu Chesina Manushulu (1973), Adavu Ramudu (1977), Vetagudu (1979), Driver Ramudu (1979), Bobbili Puli (1982) and Sardar Papa Rayudu (1980).

The children of NT Rama Rao have taken his legacy forward by getting actively involved in both politics as well as films. Nandamuri Balakrishna and Nandamuri Harikrishna, the two sons of NT Rama Rao, and even his grandsons, N.T.R Jr and Kalyan Ram are well known personalities of Telegu Cinema.

NTR married Basava Rama Tarakam when he was 20 years of age. Four daughters and eight sons were born to the couple. Many of the sons of NTR joined films. One of his daughters, Daggubati Purandeswari is into politics and Bhuvaneshwari, another daughter of NTR, has married Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Ex-CM of Andhra Pradesh.
