The historic temples of Hassan, Karnataka, are architectural marvels. The Chennakesava Temple, in the village of Belur, is one of the most magnificent examples of Hoysala architecture (Also Chennakeshava). The temple was constructed by the Hoysala ruler Vishnuvardhana in the early 12th century, when Belur served as the Hoysala kingdom's capital.

The Hoysalas governed the region for nearly three centuries, and people from all over the region still visit the Chennakesava Temple in Belur to admire the intricate works of art and sculpture and to experience the site's old-world spiritual allure.

The Chennakeshava Temple was a focal point of the Hoysala monarchy, and it is thought to be linked to the military exploits of King Vishnuvardhana, who commissioned it in 1117 AD. The king had fought and vanquished the Western Chalukyas as well as the Cholas. The temple was constructed after the top architects and artists in the country were enlisted to create new ideas and styles that would become the complex's signature.

Belur, like the other Hassan landmarks, Chennakeshava Temple, is regarded as one of the pinnacles of Hoysala architectural achievement. A massive rajagopura or gate greets visitors as they enter this massive palace. The focal point the temple is located in the heart of the city, facing east, as is customary in temple architecture.

The Kappe Channigraya temple is located to the right of the temple, and a smaller temple devoted to a Lakshmi reincarnation, the goddess Sowmyanayaki, is located just behind it. The Ranganayaki temple is located to the left of the Chennakeshava temple.

Two elaborate pillars, one of the Garuda and the other with a lamp, are highlights of the temple complex. The former dates from the Vijaynagar period, while the latter dates from the Hoysala period.
