Neermahal: An Architectural Marvel in Tripura

In 1930, the then ruler of the princely state of Tripura commissioned a British company to build a summer resort for him. Nine years later, the Maharaja received his palace called Neermahal. It was built in the middle of Lake Rudra Sagar. Since then, it has been a big attraction for people visiting Tripura.

However, human activities around Lake Rudra Sagar have greatly affected the water level over the past 50 years. The lake is believed to have shrunk by more than 40% in the last half-century. Much of this is due to the increase in population in the adjacent areas: when the company handed over the palace to the Maharaja, there were only 12 families on the lake. Today, more than 200,000 people depend on the lake. Therefore, the problem of the total disappearance of the lake after a few decades is particularly prominent, before it disappears from the earth you have to go see it.

This summer residence is inspired by Mughal-style architecture. Interestingly, every August, locals celebrate a grand festival called Neermahal Songkran. The festival lasts for 3 days, and many colorful cultural programs and activities will be held in the evening. One of the highlights of the Neermahal Water Festival is the rowing competition held on the lake. Different types of ships participate in the competition. In addition,  swimming competitions were organized during the festival.

The palace is divided into two parts: the west side is called Andal Mahal. It is specially made for the royal family. On the east side is the open-air theater, where drama, drama, dance, and other cultural activities are organized for the maharaja and his family to enjoy. There are 24 rooms in the palace. NeerMahal has two stairs leading to a platform on the lake. The Maharaja used to take a manual boat to and from the palace.
