Amid speculations of a likely reshuffle of the Narendra Modi Cabinet, Rajya Sabha MP for the Bharatiya Janata Party Jyotiraditya Scindia was seen on Tuesday visiting the Mahakaleswar Temple in Ujjain before boarding a Delhi bound flight.

Scindia, who was on a tour of Ujjain, cut short his trip and cancelled his visit to Dewas to reach Delhi. He told the media, “I am fortunate that I got an opportunity to offer prayers at Mahakal Mandir today.” He however, declined answering any questions on the possible Cabinet expansion in Delhi and added, “You all know that you won’t be able to get the answer you want from me.”

As is widely predicted, if Scindia finds his way into the Modi Cabinet, he will be the second Union Minister from the Gwalior-Chambal region.

The former Congress pillar, whose shift to the BJP last year was the primary reason for fall of the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh, is now expected to get absorbed in the Union Cabinet.

Besides Scindia, others like the former Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who stood down for Himanta Biswa Sarma in the state and LJP leader Pashupati Paras are also potential candidates for the anticipated Cabinet restructuring.

Word of other allies of the BJP such as Apna Dal getting berths in the inner circle, is also doing the rounds and the swearing in ceremony may take place as early as Wednesday, although there is no official confirmation on that.

The other candidates who are currently in the national capital awaiting the oath ceremony include Anupriya Patel (Apna Dal), Pankaj Chowdhury, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Ramshankar Katheria, Varun Gandhi, Lallan Singh and Rahul Kaswan.

The Prime Minister along with Amit Shah, BJP chief JP Nadda and other top ministers, was scheduled to have a meeting at 5pm which got cancelled. A crucial meeting was then scheduled for 7pm at Kalyan Marg, PM Modi’s residence wherein the performance of ministers was expected to be discussed.

This meeting was to be attended by notable Union ministers, like Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and other Union Ministers – Dharmendra Pradhan, Pralhad Joshi, Piyush Goyal, and Narendra Singh Tomar, besides Shah and Nadda.

Currently there are 53 ministers in the Union Cabinet. The number can go up to 81.
