The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has made a major switch in its structure on Sunday when it announced that its Joint general secretary Arun Kumar will now adopt the responsibility of coordinating between the Sangh and its political arm, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The politician who hails from Delhi, has earlier on been charged with the role of All India Prachar Pramukh. He will now take over the position held since 2014 by Krishna Gopal who is also a joint general secretary.

Arun Kumar had spent a significant amount of time in Jammu and Kashmir and was also in charge of the post of Prant Pracharak of Haryana. He had played a major role in spreading awareness about the article 370 and had a big hand in organizing campaigns to that goal. The contentious Article 370 is what had given the former state of Jammu and Kashmir its special status. It was read down by the Parliament in the year 2019.

Sources clear with the detailed role of such posts state that a coordinator’s fundamental job is to keep a close eye on the functioning of the BJP and maintaining a smooth collusion between the Sangh and the party.

The announcement has come as seven states across the country prepare for their assembly polls. Six of these states have the BJP in power, including Uttar Pradesh where there the party has a lot hanging. After getting battered by the Opposition and media alike over their unpreparedness and mismanagement of the second wave of the Covid-19 crisis, the BJP is all out to alter perceptions on the ground.

Krishna Gopal will go on remaining the overseeing entity of two prominent Sangh offshoots, the Laghu Udyog Bharati and Vidya Bharati, which deal with the MSME sector and education respectively.

A few months ago, the RSS had made a generational shift in its organisational structure by promoting Dattatreya Hosabale as general secretary and Arun Kumar along with Ramdatt Chakarddhar as joint general secretary.

A source cognizant of the details has also said, “The RSS may also appoint a second joint general secretary organisation to assist BL Santhosh, the national general secretary.”

The big change was announced during the course of an RSS meet at Chitrakoot in Madhya Pradesh.
