Animal rights in India

The Indian state of Nagaland has banned the import, trading, and sale of dog meat, which animal rights activists praised.

The ban was announced by the government of the north-eastern state as a result of a long-running campaign by animal welfare organisations.

They hailed the decision as a "major turning point" in the fight to end dog cruelty in India.

However, some civil society groups criticised the ban, calling it an attack on the state's food customs.

Although eating dog meat is illegal in some parts of India, some communities in the north-eastern region consider it a delicacy.

"The State Government has decided to prohibit the commercial import, trading, and sale of dogs, as well as the sale of cooked and uncooked dog meat. Thank you for the wise decision made by the State Cabinet "Temjen Toy, the Chief Secretary of Nagaland, tweeted on Friday.

The government provided no additional information about how the ban would be enforced.

According to Indian media, the ban was imposed after a photo of dogs bound in sacks at a wet market went viral on social media, causing outrage.

Several animal rights organisations, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), spearheaded campaigns against the sale of dog meat in Nagaland, including the FIAPO.

The Humane Society International (HSI), which has been campaigning for years to end India's dog meat trade, applauded Nagaland's decision.

"The suffering of dogs in Nagaland has long cast a dark shadow over India, and thus this news marks a major turning point in ending the cruelty of India's hidden dog meat trade," said Alokparna Sengupta, managing director of HSI.

According to the HSI, an estimated 30,000 dogs are smuggled into Nagaland each year, where they are sold in live markets and "beaten to death with wooden clubs."

Mizoram took the first step toward ending the sale of dogs earlier this year by amending legislation to remove them from the list of animals suitable for slaughter.

While not common, dog eating is practised in other countries such as China, South Korea, and Thailand.
