The government of Uttar Pradesh had urged the authorities at Lucknow airport to refrain Chhattisgarh Chief Minister BhupeshBaghel and Punjab Deputy CM Sukhjinder S Randhawa, both of whom are expected to visit LakhimpurKheri on Monday, from landing at the airport.

AICC General SecretaryPriyanka Gandhi Vadra was also stopped from making a visit here after Sunday’s incidence of violence where eight people including four farmers were killed.

Baghel alleged that Gandhi, who was on her way to LakhimpurKheri to meet the near ones of the victims, was detained at Hargaon.

In a letter addressed to the Lucknow airport authorities, Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, AwanishAwasthi wrote that the District Magistrate of LakhimpuriKehri has imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in the area, according to which any gathering which involves five or more people at a time is prohibited. Awasthi requested the airport to disallow Baghel and Randhawa from arriving here.

According to the order, which has been issued in Hindi, in order to bring the law and order situation under control in LakhimpurKheri, Section 144 has been enforced which is why, it said that the flights of the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and the Punjab Deputy Chief Minister should not be allowed to land at Lucknow'sAmausi airport.

Baghel, on his part has taken objection of this prohibition and raised questions on matter of civil rights in Uttar Pradesh. He asked whether civil rights have been suspended by the state.

In a Twitter post, Baghe wrote, “The government of Uttar Pradesh is issuing an order not to allow me to come to the state. Have civil rights been suspended in Uttar Pradesh? If Section 144 is in Lakhimpur, then why is the dictatorial government stopping you from landing in Lucknow?”

In another tweet, Baghel wrote about what happened when Priyanka Gandhi was trying to visit the affected area. He wrote, “AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been arrested in Sitapur on his way to Lakhimpur. DeependerHooda is also with him. After the killing of the farmers, now the democratic rights of the people are also being snatched away.”

Besides Gandhi, several other Opposition leaders from various parties are also scheduled to visit LakhimpurKheri, including Samajwadi Party chief AkhileshYadav.

Sunday’s violence had sparked off after a group of agitating farmers tried to hinder Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya from visiting the area.
