Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, who was on his way to LakhimpurKheri with his party workers and got arrested en route on charges of disregard for prohibitive orders, said the BJP government is akin to German dictator Hitler’s regime. He also equated the local police’s high handedness and atrocities on the common population with that of the British on freedom fighters during the pre-independence era.

Akhilesh was detained in police custody for four hours after which he was released.

He said, “The ruthlessness with which the state government is trying to crush the farmers’ agitation is akin to how similar protests by Indians were handled by the British. The Union home minister had first threatened the farmers and thereafter his son unleashed a reign of terror by knocking off farmers protesting peacefully.”

Yadav said that BJP’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ajay Mishra has been intimidating farmers to quash their agitation and the manner in which they are silencing raised voices by the oppressed reminds one of the way Hitler had handled resistance to is dictatorship.

He added, “There were cruel rulers in the world but in the BJP regime, the voice of democracy is being crushed. In the nearby Lakhimpur district, Sikhs and farmers were crushed and killed. Never has such an incident taken place in the world.”

Eight people had died out of whom four were farmers a few days ago in UP’s LakhimpurKheri. Several farmers have laid allegations that minister Ajay Mishra’s son’s car was also among those that ran over some of them. A clash soon erupted between BJP workers and a very angry mob which led to several injuries. When the SP leader tried to visit the spot, he was stopped.

The former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh demanded an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 crore and a government job for the families of the dead farmers. He also called for a resignation of the state home minister and deputy chief minister following the very “undemocratic” incident.
