Another relic of the British Raj in India, the Victoria Memorial is located in the heart of Kolkata in West Bengal. This opulent white marble structure was built in memory of Queen Victoria to celebrate her 25 years of reign over India and is almost a replica. History of Victoria Memorial
The reason for building a monument of this size is really interesting. This amazing creation is the brainchild of Lord Curzon and was created to commemorate the 25th year of the Queen's reign over India. India's leading figure after the 1857 revolt and successfully ruled the country until his death in 1901. Lord Curzon wanted the monument dedicated to him to be majestic, spacious and large, with a beautiful garden. The funds for the construction of the Victoria Monument were raised by the Indian population. A sum of 5 lakh rupees was collected and the result is this impressive monument that is literally a feast for the eyes. The Prince of the Whales laid the foundation stone for the memorial in 1906, and the memorial was finally opened to the public in 1921.
Architecture and Design of Victoria Memorial
The main architect of the Victoria Memorial is William Emerson, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, who has tastefully given the monument an Indo-Saracen architectural style, while he was inspired by Egyptian, Venetian, Mughal and other Islamic styles in The 184 m tall building is made of white Makrana marble brought from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The vast gardens surrounding the monument, which stretch over 64 acres, were designed by botanists Sir David Prain and Lord Redesdale.
