Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin expressed anguish over the recent cases of suicide by students appearing for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and urged them to refrain from taking such extreme steps.

The CM’s appeal came after a third case of suicide was reported in the past few days by a student who had appeared for the exam that is taken for an admission to undergraduate medical courses.

Soundarya, a 17-year old girl of Vellore district was the third student who resorted to such extreme measures after appearing for the controversial test. She was found dead on Wednesday, the third case in seven days and her parents stated that Soundarya had seemed depressed after writing the exam.

Stalin was visibly tormented by the young girl’s death and said in a video message, “t feels as if my chest is being pierced with a spear every time I hear the death of medical aspirants. Your life is invaluable to your family and the nation. I appeal to students not to take extreme steps.”

The Chief Minister also argued that the Central government was “cold hearted” to insist on NEET results for determining allocation of seats to students for the course despite the exam being replete with flaws. He added, “Qualification can be acquired by studying. You don’t need qualification (in NEET) to study.”

The Tamil Nadu state government also came up with a helpline number for students to contact if they felt the need for counselling. The helpline number 104 aims at helping aspirants overcome the stress of exam and admissions to coveted courses.

Stalin also plans to meet up with chief ministers of various other states over matters of admissions to medical courses on the basis of Standard twelve marks instead the NEET scores.
