SarbanandaSonowal, the former chief minister of Assam and union minister got elected to the RajyaSabha from the state of Assam. The seat was lying vacant with no other candidate having filed a nomination and thus Sonowal claimed the seat unopposed.

Sonowal had filed his nomination for the seat on September 21, 2021, a day before the last date of filing. While the election is scheduled for October 4, the Opposition clarified that they were not interested in fielding a candidate to challenge the position.

The minister collected his winner’s certificate from the Assam Assembly Secretariat at Dispur in the presence of Assam chief minister HimantaBiswaSarma, State BJP president BhabeshKalita and water resources minister PijushHaarika.

After the nomination got filed, Sonowal said, “I have filed my nomination papers with blessings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, national BJP president JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, all national BJP leaders, Chief Minister HimantaBiswaSarma, state BJP president BhabeshKalita and MLAs of the ruling coalition, besides the people of Assam. I express my gratitude to the BJP leadership for allowing me to serve the people.”

He added, “I seek blessings from the people of Majuli. My responsibility towards the people of Majuli will always be there." Chief Minister HimantaBiswaSarma said, "The Opposition said that they would not field any candidate for the vacant RajyaSabha seat in the state. I thank them for this cooperation. I hope Union Minister Sonowal will work for Assam and other states of the Northeast.”

With Sonowal’s nomination, the BJP’s strength in the RajyaSabha from the state went up to three. Its ally the AsomGanaParishad (AGP) has one member in the Upper House.

Out of the seven seats that Assam has in the Upper House of the Parliament, two other seats are held by the Congress party and one by an independent MP.
